Lightwork was granted the Stephen Joseph Award by the Society for Theatre Research, to help fund an exploration into specific nineteenth-century devices and techniques, their remounting in workshop conditions and their integration into the production itself. It was our intention that devices drawn from the performance realm of a previous era were staged precisely as historical phenomena: as effects or solutions appropriate to a particular era of theatre production using the technologies available at that time. The research outcome was therefore presented to the audience as historicised illusionist practice.
The Jerwood Space, London, hosted a two-week research and development phase.
